I just got this book two days ago, having eagerly awaited it for a year since I finished Forest Mage. I always enjoy reading Robin Hobb, and this book was no exception.

Continuing on the story begun in Shaman’s Crossing and continued in Forest Mage, the fate of the soldier son Nevalle Burvelle falls ever darker. His soul having split in two when he first met the Tree Woman, the Gernian part is put on the back seat as the Speck half takes control of Nevalles body, identifying himself as Soldier Boy.

As Soldier Boy becomes a full part of Speck society, Nevalle realizes that he is burning every bridge to Gernian society, to Gettys, to his familiy and to his king. The magic has won, and he turns against Gettys and the roadbuilders, Soldier Son drawing on the memories of Nevalle, prepares to assault Gettys itself.

But in the background the god of Balance, Orondula still hovers, demanding a life or a death from Nevalle/Soldier Boy for the live they stole from him, and Epipeny still hopes to help Nevalle. But still, things turn darker.

This is an excellent book, excellently written and I fully recommend it.

Now, I got ahold of Pandora’s Star last time I was in Oslo along with Eragon, both good books, and I’ll be reading the second half of Pandora’s Star series, named Judas Unchained next, along with the second book of the inheritance trilogy (Eragon).
